The three streams side by side
| Stream | Subjects | Leads to | Suits a child who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science | Physics, Chemistry, Maths, plus Biology, Computer Science or Electronics | Engineering, medicine, pure science, architecture, defence | Likes problems, experiments and Maths |
| Commerce | Accountancy, Business Studies, plus Economics, Statistics or Basic Maths | CA, B.Com, BBA, CS, finance, banking | Likes numbers, business and clear rules |
| Arts | History, Economics, Political Science, Sociology and others | Law, civil services, journalism, humanities degrees | Likes reading, writing and debate |
Presidency PU College Hebbal teaches Science and Commerce. If Arts is the right fit, the answer here is still honest: choose the stream first, then the college.
Five questions to ask your child
- Which Class 10 subject did you pick up on your own, without homework?
- Do you enjoy solving a problem until it works, or writing about an idea?
- What do you picture doing at 25? Say a job, not a college.
- Would you rather spend an evening on a lab report, a ledger or an essay?
- If this stream turned out hard, would you still want to be in it?
Ask them one at a time and write the answers down. A child who says "I don't know" to the third question is common. That is fine. It is a reason to keep options wide, not a reason to guess.
What the Class 10 marks can and cannot tell you
Marks in Science and Maths show how comfortable your child is with the first-year syllabus. A child who scored low in Maths and dislikes it will find PCM hard for two years. That is worth hearing.
Marks do not show interest, effort or how a child grows once they are studying something they chose. A steady child at 70% who loves Maths often does better than a 92% child who chose Science for the family. No college can promise a result from a Class 10 mark.
Which entrance exam each stream opens
- NEET (medicine, dentistry, AYUSH) needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12. That means Science with Biology.
- JEE Main and KCET (engineering) need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12. That means any Science combination with Maths.
- CA Foundation can be registered for after Class 10, in any stream. Commerce students find the syllabus overlaps with their subjects.
- Law entrance exams such as CLAT are open after Class 12 in any stream.
So the real fork is early: Biology or not, Maths or not. Commerce with Maths can still lead to economics or data courses. Science without Maths cannot lead to engineering.
Mistakes families make
- Choosing a stream because friends chose it. They will be in other sections within a month.
- Choosing PCMB "to be safe" without asking whether the child likes Biology. See PCMB vs PCMC.
- Treating Commerce as the easy option. Commerce with CA is a long, demanding route.
- Deciding at the college counter. Decide at home first, then use the college to check the choice.
- Deciding on the day Class 10 results come out. Wait a few days if you can.
What to do this month
- Talk with your child with the questions above, and write the answers down.
- Pick two or three colleges within a comfortable commute. Time the journey at college hours, not on a Sunday.
- Visit with your child on a working day, and see a class in session.
- Ask each college which combinations it teaches this year, who teaches them, and what the fee sheet says in writing.
- Choose together. Tell the college your final choice and ask for it in writing.
Admissions for 2027-28 follow the Class 10 results. The 1st PUC admission steps at Hebbal are four: ask, visit, apply and orientation.
